How To Work For Free? - Self Improvement
I was talking to a close friend of mine yesterday about life change and self improvement strategies. We were discussing the process of transition along the path to self determined success. My friend began to talk about his full schedule and how he desired to discipline himself more.
You see, my friend is hard worker but he has a very busy schedule that requires him to travel often. Yet when he is off the clock or has down time where he doesn't have to travel he just relaxes. He's so glad to have a break and be at home he just "rests" is how he puts it.
His dilemma as he goes on to explain is how to getting his self improvement goals going and how to get going with making his dreams come true. He is not unlike you. He has big dreams and dreams of financial freedom and success. He has dreams of being a better provider with both is time and finances. He doesn't want to work because he has to. He wants to work because he wants to.
I told my friend that "you have to be willing to work off the clock before you can stop punching THE clock".
I went on the tell him that it is impossible to create your success reality if you aren't willing to work for free. My point to him was that if he wanted to improve his financial situation he has to be willing to work for himself for free.
And this is my encouragement for you today. It is way to easy to get caught in the trap of working because you have to with no time or interesting in creating a plan to work because you want to. Most people reach the point of being sick and tired of the work they do and they want and instant exit or instant relief.
There is no reasonable instant relief in sight for most people. The fact of the matter is that if you don't have considerable savings, other income or wealth you are going anywhere soon without a penalty. Living paycheck to paycheck is a "work because you have to" scenario. That isn't how you have to live though.
But the problem is the pain point. When the pain gets painful enough that is just the beginning of change. This is where working for free comes in. I'm sure that you have a full day and busy schedule with most of your time being consumed by a day job that takes about 8+ hours out of your weekday right off the top.
Don't allow your busy schedule and "paying" work prevent you from doing the real work necessary for self improvement change and succcess. I told my friend that in order for him the create the life he really wants he has to realize that the real work begins after the "paying work" ends. That's right. The real work on making your dreams happen takes plan off the clock and without a salary. You are usually alone and there aren't any pats on the back or acknowledgement by others or commendations or rewards during initial work activities.
There is what I call the "Principle of Obscurity". There is a time where you have to labor free from sheer determination to succeed. You must be willing to labor sight unseen with a eye or vision of your rewards to come.
During your period of "obscurity" you are laying the foundation and sowing the seeds of your future. It is here that your commitment is matured and your personal fortitude is established. Because now you have to trust the process you working with to bring you reward later.
When you sow seed into ground you don't get fruit immediately do you? Of course not. What happens is that you tilled and prepared the ground for the seed sown and than you water and nourish the ground and wait patiently for your fruit to spring forth from the ground. It seems like nothing is happening.
But what is actually happening is that roots are growing deep and establishing a firm foundation to support the growth that is about to occur above ground. When your plant breaks above ground the roots have been reached deep to support the plant.
This is what is required for you. You have to refuse the long term commitment to "paying work" and be willing to work for yourself "for free". This isn't easy but it is worth it. You have to make your situation work for you. If you think you don't have the time, make the time. But understand that you will burn your off the clock hours in order to break free of that "timecard".
This work that you are doing for free is work that causes your roots to grown deep. You are establishing your foundation for success. You are building in private what will eventually be rewarded for in public.
Self improvement work is always an investment that pays dividends down the road. You have to pay your dues to earn the prize. But what a prize it is!
"At some point....At some time in your life....You will get tired of losing. It is then....and only then....You will start winning." -- Mike Murdock
You have to take a "no excuses" approach to getting your goals accomplished. Working for free is one of the greatest commitments you can make to yourself.
Imagine being able to work because you want to. How much energy would have then? How would you rise and great each new day? Not every one wants to own their own company or manage employees or evenc create mega wealth.
What we all really want is to be able to enjoy the work we do and work because we want to...not because we have to. Are you willing to work for free?
This is transition that can tax you limited energy and thinking at the end of a full day.
This transition will not pay you as well to start as your current "pay work" does.
This transition will can be risky because you are working from faith and vision. There isn't a steady check like the day job or "pay work".
Making this transition isn't easy but it will be worth it. You have to willing to make time for you and your dreams and this means you will start out working for free. You are worth the investment.
